About James

Hello, I’m James. I’ll be building your project.

I’m an independent developer and a working scientist. I design, build and look after websites, web apps, Android apps and games — and I’m the only person who works on them.

James Froggatt — developer, scientist, and the person who answers your emails.

My story

From the lab to the codebase.

I didn’t start out in software. I’m a scientist — a researcher and professor in aquatic nutrition and fish behaviour. It’s a field where a claim only counts if you can measure it, repeat it and show where it came from.

Code arrived the way it does for a lot of scientists: first to handle data, then to build the tools I couldn’t find anywhere else. Over the years, building software stopped being a side skill and became the work I enjoy most.

Today I design and build websites, web apps, Android apps and games for individuals, small businesses and professionals. I work alone, on purpose. When you talk to me, you’re talking to the person who plans your project, builds it, tests it — and fixes it if anything ever goes wrong.

I’ve kept the habits research gave me. I plan before I build. I test as I go. I check facts before they go live. And when I tell you something, I can show you why it’s true.

If a number can’t be traced back to a real source, it doesn’t go in. That’s how I ran my research — and it’s how I build software.

Why it matters

What a scientist brings to your project.

Evidence, not guesswork

Recommendations come with reasons. If I suggest a change to your site, I’ll tell you what it’s based on — and what I expect it to improve.

Checked before it goes live

I plan the work, build it in small steps and test each one, so problems are found by me — not by your customers.

Plain English — or French

No jargon and no surprises. You’ll always know what’s done, what’s next and what it costs, in whichever language suits you.

Yours to keep

Clean, documented code that you own outright. If you ever want someone else to take over, everything will be where they expect it.

Away from the screen

Usually by a lake. Sometimes looking up.

When I’m not building software, you’ll usually find me carp fishing — notebook in hand, because I can’t stop measuring things: bait, water temperature, weather. I’ve even written a guide to it.

On clear nights I’m more likely to be looking up. Astrophysics is my other rabbit hole — which may explain why this website is full of sky.
